Fruit Still Life

 Kinder: Fruit Still Life

Kinder students studied Jan Vas Os and Frida Kahlo for this project. Both of these master artists drew fruit still life, though in quite different styles. Kahlo painted in a more contemporary style, while Os was more traditional. Students loved finding flowers in Os's work and parrots in Kahlo's art! What fun. We also talked about what fruit was their favorite to eat and why fruit is so good for us. (Hidden science lesson to!) I love how art has a way of tying in so many subjects at once. Still life is my ultimate favorite subject to paint myself and I believe the students enjoyed it to.

This was a great way to introduce kinder to color values. We only used 2 values for each fruit. Students pressed hard with oil pastel on half of their fruit and lighter on the other half with the same color. Then students overlaid a second color onto the half of the fruit that had the lighter first color. Students designed a tablecloth (a nice "free choice" part of this project). Students also enjoyed watercoloring the background, The background was more review in color mixing (secondary from primaries and analogous colors). Students also had lots of cutting and gluing to do (some nice fine motor skill practice). Students enjoyed creaing a composition, as they had to decide where to place each fruit on their "table". We talked about placing their largest fruit in the center to create balance. Some kinder students didn't follow this but I do love the variety in composition and design. I am truly impressed by my little kinder students!
