Repetition-Stamping Project

2nd Grade: Repetition and Paul Klee

I did this project 2 yrs ago with 2nd, and I loved it so much, I decided to do it again this year.  We looked at some of Paul Klees paintings that used many repetetive shapes. We talked about why he did this and how it unified the painting. We also explored how fabrics today use repetetive design. (students found prints and patterns on their own clothing). We did a larger format, going with 12" x 12" instead of 9" x 9". Students created a checkerboard with pre-cut squares (8 squares). Then next art class they stamped with various "tools". First, was yogurt cup stamping ( we used Yoplait brand cups). We used the bottom of the cups to create 8 circles in every other square. Then, students used squares of cardboard to stamp a "line design" either into the circles or the other squares that were still blank. Lastly, students took upcylced pieces and stamped. (we used tic tac mint boxes, duplo blocks, plastic forks, wooden craft sticks, half a plastic easter egg, basically all kinds of things!) It was a neat lesson in up-cycling as well!

Great job 2nd grade!
