Spooky Houses

2nd Grade: Spooky House Architecture

2nd Graders learned about geometric vs organic shapes. We talked about organic shapes being found in nature, (plants, rocks, clouds). Organic shapes are curvilinear and can be a surprise. Geometric shapes are always the same and have rules. Most students can identify them instantly (square, circle, triangle). Students looked at some photographs of architecture (houses all over the world). They identified them as having either geometric or organic shapes.

Since, it was Sept/Oct. we went with drawing houses for our art (and yes, they could be "spooky", but did not have to be). I did a step by step with students on drawing some basic houses on a hill. Students could add in windows, doors, chimneys, stairs, gates, fences, a moon. We talked about different textures for the roof and walls, (tiles, bricks, siding, etc). Students drew with pencil, traced with gold or silver metallic sharpie. Then, added color with Crayola Construction paper crayons. We did also discuss blending colors with the crayons to create secondary or intermediate colors.
Great job 2nd grade!
