Radial Designs-2nd Grade

2nd Grade: Radial Designs

2nd grade students looked at the art of Kandinsky. Students learned about abstract art-the fabulous colors, lines, shapes and imagination. Students found "hidden" objects in Kandinsky's work. We also talked about why we liked his art, even though the content did not look like any particular subject.
We also viewed sea creatures-starfish, sea anenomes, sea urchins to view radial symmetry. We talked about what makes something have radial symmetry.

We brought abstract art and radial symmetry together in these Radial Design Projects.

Students did not draw a design first with pencil. Rather, students drew a small circle in the center of their paper and then proceeded to paint a radial design around it. Students were encouraged to use many different colors and many different kinds of lines, shapes, and patterns. We also discussed tints and did a brief review on how to add white to any hue to tint it. Students were given 6 colors and white to tint. Students were also given 2 brushes-a small round and a flat.

I love all these unique designs and colors! Terrific job 2nd Grade!!
